Shantideva’s most famous work, “Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life” (Skt. bodhisattvacharyavatara), is traditionally considered the preeminent text on mind training (blo spyong). In the second year of our text study we will deal with the Enlightenment Mind (Skt. bodhicitta), its benefits, outstanding spiritual qualities and meditative development. As a basis we use central chapters from Shantideva’s text: Chapters 1 (The Advantages of Striving for Awakening), 2 (Confession of Wrongdoings) and 3 (Acceptance of Striving for Awakening) respectively deal with the benefits, the accumulation of spiritual merits and the purification of negatives in preparation for the development of enlightenment, as well as the acceptance of enlightenment; the second part of chapter 8 (Meditative Collection) deals with the actual meditative development of enlightenment.
The course will bring us closer to central aspects of Mahayana Buddhism and is thus aimed at people who are generally interested in the development of Great Compassion, Great Love and Enlightenment or who want to set off on the path to enlightenment in the “Great Vehicle”.
We have developed this course especially for those who have the knowledge of the BPR course (Buddhist Philosophy and Religion) or BSM course (Buddhist Science of Mind). However, participation is open to everyone! If you would like to attend these teachings and feel that you should refresh your basic Buddhist knowledge, we recommend reading the following books:
