Our course offers the unique opportunity to learn the traditional system of Tibetan medicine (Sowa Rigpa) from authentic Tibetan doctors (= Amchi). This knowledge can be profitably integrated both in the private sector and in the professional environment and applied practically for health promotion.
The holistic system of traditional Tibetan medicine (Sowa Rigpa, short: TTM) originated in Tibet as a synthesis of originally Tibetan and other healing systems. The “Tantras of Tibetan Medicine” (tib: rgyud bzhi) are the most important textual basis and still serve as the basis for study today. The course therefore also provides a deep insight into Tibetan culture and and the “Tibetan way of life”.
Anyone is welcome to join! There are no prerequisites. Your teachers will be traditional Tibetan Amchis, alongside other experienced and qualified teachers. Language of instruction is English with German translation.

Depending on the module, classes are either Attendance Classes or Distant Learning:
- Attendance Classes are conducted at Tibet Center Austria, located in the peaceful, scenic mountain village of Knappenberg, Austria – directions »
- Distance Learning is provided online either by:
– Live, interactive Webinars
– or pre-recorded audio or video
While all classes are available online, we do recommend that you attend the first and last modules in person, if at all possible.
Attendance Classes are offered during intensive, 2-day weekends, while Distance Learning modules tend to be series of hour-and-a-half long classes; you may join the live Webinars or watch the recordings online on your own time. Because all modules are available online, and can be completed through distance study, you may join the course even after it has already started!
The course starts in autumn 2020 and ends with the final exam in July 2021.
Note: Currently, the Austrian Embassy in Delhi does not issue visas for third country nationals, which means: this year there will be no attendance classes with the Tibetan doctor, as entry from India is not possible.
This course therefore starts with online modules and LIVE webinars (each approx. 4-6 weeks AFTER the respective module):
Module 1: online from September 25, 2020
Module 2: online from 31 October 2020
Module 3: online from 25 January 2021 online
We hope and are confident that we will then be able to carry out the planned presence modules in spring 2021.
Upon completion of all 8 modules and positive evaluation of at least 80% of the assignments, you will receive a confirmation of participation and are admitted to the final exam.
Students who pass the exam will receive a certificate issued jointly by Tibetzentrum Austria and Men-Tsee-Khang (the Tibetan Medical Institute in Dharamsala, India).
