Overview of all programs »
We believe that building a healthier global community happens one person at a time, and that Tibetan Buddhism offers a unique perspective for approaching the common challenges we each face—from the small, daily difficulties of stress to big-picture issues, like how to lead a meaningful life.
That’s why all of our activities are geared toward strengthening individual well-being and promoting our shared, human values in service of individual, interpersonal, and societal health and harmony. Our events are always open to anyone and everyone, no matter their background or religious affiliation!
Please feel free to read more about us below, and continue browsing our website. We also welcome you to join our community by taking part in a course, seminar, or retreat!
Who we are
Inspired by the unique vision of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, who is also one of the principle founders, Tibet Center Austria provides opportunities for professional training, education, therapeutical services, and community activities based on the living tradition of Tibetan Buddhism.
Our goal is contributing to the peace, health, and harmony of our program participants, positively impacting their inner lives, interpersonal relationships, and society at large. Serving others in the name of universal human values is one of our guiding principles.
What we do
Tibet Center Austria offers comprehensive study programs in subjects like Buddhist philosophy, psychology, traditional Tibetan medicine and professional training in Tibetan natural therapies – alongside seminars, workshops, and talks—whether online or in-person, our activities are open to everyone!
Beyond offering high-quality education programs, we’re also building a community of practitioners based on an authentic spiritual lineage. You’re always welcome to join one of our many special events related to the wisdom & practices of the Tibetan Buddhist heritage!
Tibet Center Austria (TCA) was founded in 2008 by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Geshe Tenzin Dhargye, and the Tibet Office Geneva, with support from the Carinthian State government of Austria. The only of its kind in Europe, TCA aims to realize the Dalai Lama’s vision for providing secular education based on universal human values alongside building a spiritual community that preserves the unique cultural heritage of Tibetan Buddhism.
We have worked towards health, harmony & understanding by training some 600 students in philosophy, religion & traditional medicine; hosting around 7,000 persons for seminars, workshops & lectures and connecting over 40,000 people with His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s public events in Austria.
We offer a wide variety of educational programs, from semester-long intensive diploma courses and certificate programs in subjects like Buddhist philosophy and psychology, stress relief (sogom), and secular ethics, to weekend workshops and one-off seminars.
Our courses are designed to be flexible in terms of schedule and location: Most are available online via distance-learning, and all are open to the general public, no matter their background. They are especially suitable for professionals in health, consulting, education, and social work…
We also offer educational coursework in the traditional medicine of Tibet, such as the Fundamentals of TTM (Tibetan Traditional Medicine) and the advanced TTM-Text Studies, based on the classical text of Tibetan medicine: the rGyud bZhi.
Plus, unique to our center is the professional training we’re able to provide and certify in the field; participants who complete our training qualify for the official Austrian trade license (Gewerbeberechtigung) for practicing Tibetan massage & traditional therapies.
In addition to our full-time classes, we also offer one-day and weekend seminars, workshops, and retreats on a variety of Buddhist academic topics and contemplative practices.
Whether you’re someone with a passing interest in Tibetan wisdom and culture, a non-religious practitioner, or a devout Buddhist, you’ll find a wide range of suitable programs at our center.
All of our activities work towards building happy, healthy, and meaningful lives, along with the transmission of Tibet’s unique cultural and spiritual heritage.
Our Partners & Teachers
We work closely with Central University of Tibetan Studies (CUTS), Sarnath, India to offer diploma courses in Buddhist philosophy & psychology, while our partners for the traditional medicine program is the Mentseekhang (Tibetan Institute of Medicine) in Dharamsala, India.
Our resident teacher for Buddhist philosophy & psychology (and director of the center), appointed by H.H. the Dalai Lama, is Geshe Tenzin Dhargye. We also invite experts from a range of universities and institutions across Asia, Europe, and the US for specific subjects…
Where we are
Our center is located in southern Austria, in a quaint mountain village called Knappenberg, just off the main roundabout in the middle of town.
Along with neighboring Hüttenberg, the historical childhood home of 7 Years in Tibet’s Heinrich Harrer, the region is sometimes affectionately referred to as “Little Tibet.”
You’ll find us here, nestled in amongst the rolling green hills, snow-capped mountains, and alpine forests that make this place so picturesque and tranquil…
